Joint Pain Q & A

What are the common causes of joint pain?

The human body has up to 350 joints. Your joints allow you to move, which exposes them to physical stress and increases their vulnerability to degeneration and injury. As a result, a wide range of factors contributes to joint pain.

Some of the most common causes of joint pain include:

  • Arthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Tendonitis
  • Injuries
  • Lupus
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Osteoporosis

Depending on the cause of your joint pain, you may have constant or intermittent pain. Your pain may be accompanied by stiffness and swelling, and it could become so severe that it gets in the way of your everyday activities.

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is a group of more than 100 diseases that cause joint pain. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. It’s the degenerative form of the disease that develops as your cartilage wears away.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is another prevalent type of the disease. RA is an autoimmune disorder that attacks the synovial lining of your joints, causing inflammation, stiffness, and pain.

How is the cause of joint pain diagnosed?

At Joshuason Rehabilitation & Pain Management LTD, Dr. Wrightson offers compassionate, patient-focused exams and testing to identify the root cause of your joint pain. He collects your personal and family medical history and details about your joint pain and other symptoms.

During your physical exam, he checks for signs of inflammation, tests your range of motion, and gauges your pain.

Dr. Wrightson may also order blood tests, X-rays, or MRIs to gather more information about the cause of your joint pain. An accurate diagnosis is critical to creating an effective treatment plan with pain management.

How is joint pain treated?

Depending on the location and cause of your pain, Dr. Wrightson may recommend a variety of treatments, including:

  • Spinal cord stimulators
  • Intrathecal pain pumps
  • Dorsal root ganglion stimulators
  • Peripheral nerve blocks
  • Radiofrequency neural ablation procedures

Dr. Wrightson may also suggest physiotherapy, weight loss, and other noninvasive at-home treatments to manage your discomfort.
